October 2012: Mauritius - A destination for Higher Education

Ken EnDear Valued investors,

Our sustained efforts to enhance the business climate of Mauritius and our effective investor-friendly platform have resulted in the very positive ranking of Mauritius to the 19th position in the World Bank Doing Business Report 2013. For the fifth consecutive year, our position as the premier country to do business in the Sub-Saharan African region is confirmed.

While opportunities across the African continent are increasingly being tapped into by global investors, access to timely and up-to-date information and analysis on Africa remains a challenge in many circles. In line with its vision, the Government of Mauritius aspires to transform the island into a regional knowledge hub and a centre of expertise for Africa and the region. In this respect, BOI is hosting the Africa Centre of Excellence for Business, a repository of information on Africa for potential partners and service providers. The centre was officially launched by Honorable Xavier-Luc Duval, GCSK, Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development on 24th October.

Mauritius is already home to a number of international knowledge providers in the higher education realm. Pursuant to its policy to further economic diversification and promote emerging sectors, BOI is actively engaged in attracting institutions involved in higher education while positioning Mauritius as the knowledge centre for African students.

In this respect, the Mauritius Higher Education Conference was organised in Kenya on 3rd October with a view to attracting foreign students to pursue their studies in Mauritius. This initiative was led by Dr. the Honourable Rajeshwar Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology. It was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the potential of Mauritius as an unequalled destination for higher education. We are pleased to present to you an exclusive interview of the Honourable Minister in this edition of our newsletter.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our investors for the trust they have placed in us as their investment advisory and facilitating partner. This has contributed to BOI being presented with the "Investment Promotion Agency of the Year' award at the Africa Investor Investment and Business Leader Awards 2012 earlier in October. The presentation to BOI, for the second year in a row, is seen as a recognition of the institution's contribution in enhancing the investment climate.

With these words, I wish you all an enjoyable read and assure you, as usual, of our support and best services.
