The Mauritian Film Industry Picks Up Momentum
As a film shooting destination, Mauritius will be the exclusive spot for the first Hollywood movie to be filmed in its entirety on the island.
The Board of Investment has approved its first big-budget Hollywood movie entitled “Serenity”. This ambitious project worth MUR 629 million will feature Hollywood stars including Matthew Mcconaughey, Anne Hathaway and Uma Thurman, all of them Oscar nominated actors and winners. The film will be produced by Greg Shapiro.
Following the project’s approval under the Film Rebate Scheme, shooting is due to start in July 2017. Around 80 local crew will be involved in this production which is expected to create further business linkages with local financial institutions and other suppliers of services.
The island will be at the heart of the story and the film will be shot exclusively in Mauritius. Consequently, the island’s visibility and image as a competitive film-shooting destination will be strengthened.
The Film Rebate Scheme was introduced in 2013. It presently makes provision for the reimbursement of up to 40% of all qualified production expenditure (QPE). As at date, 50 completed film projects have injected approximately MUR 750 million into the Mauritian economy.
