Newsletter January 2017 - Building a new ecosystem by leveraging innovative technologies

Dear Valued Investors,

Welcome to the first edition of BOI’s newsletter for the year.

We all, at the beginning of a new year, devise smart strategies to achieve the targets that we set. Invariably, the objective is continuous improvement. This analogy can be applied to our economy and our quest to continuously boost our productive capacity. This inevitably will result from harnessing the disruptive trends in technology that are changing the world today.

Indeed, the buzz is all about the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the impact it will have in revolutionising the business world. This ecosystem comprises of exciting developments such as Blockchain, Fintech, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), custom manufacturing and 3D printing, autonomous vehicles and big data analytics amongst so many others.

The social impact of this revolution is significant as well. According to the Digital Transformation Initiative analysis of the World Economic Forum and Accenture, in the next decade, nearly 60% of the $100 trillion value of this revolution will accrue to society.

For us, it is imperative that we are part of this revolution and attract quality investments in this category of activities to attain our developmental goals. For that, we must tap into our inventiveness to fuel such activities, increase our resilience to global uncertainties, and create high-end jobs.

Presently, interest in these innovative practices is gathering pace in Mauritius, especially in Fintech and Blockchain. This edition of our newsletter provides an overview of some of those latest developments. This can be discerned from the findings of the 2016 ICT-BPO Survey of the BOI which confirm the transformation that is well under way, with a 7% increase in the number of ICT companies over a year. More interestingly, the survey found that 35 % of the industry today are start-ups engaged in emerging activities within the segment.

The Board of Investment newsletter also presents the Regulatory Sandbox License which can be the right vector to trigger a wave of innovative projects. Articles on sustainable urban development and doing business reforms complete the newsletter.

I wish you a very pleasant read.
