First Hollywood film production “Serenity” with lead actor Matthew McConaughey starts shooting in Mauritius on Monday 10th July 2017
The Board of Investment organized the launching ceremony for the first Hollywood production to be shot completely in Mauritius on Friday 7th July 2017 at Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa in the presence of renowned Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey who plays a leading role in the forthcoming movie entitled “Serenity”.
The first clap ceremony of the launch of Serenity, approved under the Film Rebate Scheme, was graced by the Honourable Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. During his keynote address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Government`s commitment to develop and promote the film and media sector as a potentially new economic driver with aim of stimulating growth, job creation and investment.
The Board of Investment has already approved 9 projects, including the big-budget movie ‘Serenity’. These 9 projects represent Qualifying Production Expenditure (QPE) totaling MUR 1.2 billion to be injected the domestic economy. The shooting of “Serenity” has created job opportunities for some 80 local crew members who are actively working in close collaboration with their foreign counterparts. The Qualitative Production Expenditure relating to this movie amounts to MUR 630 million.
In the short span of time since its introduction, the Film Rebate Scheme has attracted some MUR 760 million worth of expenditure by film producers. It has also contributed to major sectors of the economy such as hospitality and travel industry, professional and technical services, creative services, as well as freight and logistics. Up to now film productions have been mainly from India, South Africa, China and under different categories, namely feature films, TV programs and documentaries, and high-end commercials.
The Film Rebate Scheme has created more than 600 direct and indirect jobs, comprising local crews and technicians who work on a regular basis with foreign line producers.
In its endeavor to promote new sectors of the economy, the Board of Investment will further pursue its strategy to promote Mauritius as a high-end film shooting destination.
