BOI concludes fruitful mission at MIPIM 2017
The mission of the Mauritian delegation at MIPIM 2017 culminated in two events of strategic importance, notably a business forum in collaboration with Team Côte D’Azur and a working session in Monaco.
Memorandum of Understanding: BOI and Team Côte D’Azur
In a bid to consolidate economic and business ties with the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, BOI organised a business forum with the Team Côte D’Azur which was held on 16th March 2017 at Chambre de Commerce and Industrie, Nice. Team Côte D’Azur, the official investment promotion agency for Côte d’Azur, was established by the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council, the Nice Côte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur. Its main objective of is to promote investment on an international level.
A first working session comprising BOI and Team Cote D’Azur took place on Monday 13th March 2017 at BeachComber French Riviera, where they were joined by the Communauté D’Agglomérations Sophie Antipolis (CASA), the Conseil de Développement de la Métropole de Nice, the Sophia Club Entreprises, to set up an action plan.
During the working session, the Mauritian real-estate captains introduced their projects which include the development of smart cities, marina and luxurious residential units for which strategic partners are actively sought. Discussions centered around the need for expertise in the creation of marina as well as partners for knowledge sharing with relation to urban technologies which can be integrated in smart cities. The role of private and public partnerships as a catalyst for development and the need for complementarity between the urban structures were emphasized. In line with the creation of smart cities and complex mixed-use developments, the importance of adapting our legal framework (Code Civile) was further accentuated.
Moreover, means to be deployed to make Mauritius a Smart Island were discussed. It was highlighted that Mauritius could become “La Cité Du Savoir” (Knowledge City), thereby providing a crucial link between study and work in pivotal fields which are in high demand for the economic development of the country and for addressing the challenges of unemployment. Mauritius, it was pointed out, should also identify key talents and find ways to attract and retain new talents.
It was further noted that the sophistication of the Mauritian financial sector is the bedrock for the development of FinTech.
Further to the ongoing collaboration over the past months and the work session, on Thursday 16th March 2017, a business forum was organised to cement the relationship between BOI and Team Cote D’Azur. During the event, BOI, represented by its Managing Director, Mr. Ken Poonoosamy, signed a Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU) with Team Côte D’Azur represented by its CEO, Mr. Jacques Lesieur.
The main objective of the MOU is to develop strong business ties, establish the modalities of cooperation for investment and business development and set up a dynamic platform for the promotion and expansion of economic and trade relations between Mauritius and the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
In his speech, Mr. Ken Poonoosamy emphasized the close economic, political, cultural and diplomatic ties between Mauritius and France. He further shared the vision of Mauritius as a launch pad for investment in Africa and a “ville intelligente” with enabling framework introduced for the creation of smart cities, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and improved sea, air and network connectivity within the consolidation a diversified economy. Various smart city projects and investment opportunities were presented and the floor was opened for a Q & A session.
The business forum was attended by 120 people consisting mainly of the top management of several companies. It concluded with a networking event and Business to Business meetings.
Working Session in Monacco
On Friday 17th March 2017, a working session with 50 high-profile businessmen was organised in Monacco in collaboration with Mr. Luc Raffard who has been regular visitor to Mauritius since the last 40 years. He facilitated various meetings between the Mauritian delegation comprising elected members of parliament and high government officials and the business community in Monaco. Investment projects are in the pipeline as a result of those meetings. Realized projects include the opening of a sports shop under Go-Sport and City Sport brands, the commercialization and distribution of Casino brand for the fast-moving consumer goods segment, the creation of a ‘centrale information comptabilité’ for Leclerc group in Mauritius, among others.
BOI concluded the day with a courtesy call to the Consul Honoraire, Mr Michel Gramaglia, at the Consulat de Monaco.
