1. Doing Business 2009 – World Bank

Mauritius is Africa’s easiest place to do business


Mauritius reached the 24th position out of 181 countries represented in the Doing Business 2009 rankings. Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa and 2nd among Small Island Developing States (SIDS) after Singapore, the global number 1. The Doing Business report offers investors great insight into the investment climate and the ease of doing business of the various destinations. The overall ranking is made up of 10 indicators including: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and closing a business. Mauritius has constantly improved its ranking, moving from 32nd out of 175 countries in 2007 report to 27th/178 in 2008 and finally 24th/181 in its 2009 report.

2. Top Regional Reformer- Doing Business Reformers’ Club- World Bank

World Bank names Mauritius top regional reformer for the African region


The Doing Business Reformers’ Club recognised governments which have carried out the most business reforms over the last five years during their last event carried out in April 2009. Mauritius was Africa’s top regional reformer. Mauritius was ranked 24th globally in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2009 report.

3. Global Enabling Trade Report 2009 – World Economic Forum

Mauritius is easiest country for trade in Africa


Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa and 33rd out of 121 countries in the Global Enabling Trade Report 2009. This WEF report analyses the factors enabling trade in industrialized and emerging economies and provides information on the ease of free flow of goods across national borders. The report provides a good assessment of the country’s strengths and challenges.

4. Award for Most Improved Investment Climate- Africa Business Awards

African Business Awards selects Mauritius for Most Improved Investment Climate Award category


The African Business Awards is an event organised by IC Publications, publishers of African Business magazine, and the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), to celebrate excellence and best practices in African business and recognise those who have driven Africa’s rapidly transforming economy. This year, Mauritius has won the Award for Most Improved Investment Climate, one of the 12 categories of awards at the event.

5. Quality of Living global city rankings 2009 – Mercer survey

Port-Louis, capital city of Mauritius ranks as best quality of living among African cities


Mercer’s Quality of Living ranking covers 215 cities and provides valuable comparative information on 10 indicators namely: political and social environment, medical and health considerations, public services and transport, consumer goods, economic environment, schools and education, recreation, housing, socio-cultural environment and natural environment. Port-Louis ranks 82nd globally and 1st in Africa.

6. Climate Protection Award 2009- United States Environmental Protection Agency

Mauritius wins accolade for its efforts in environment protection


Mauritius, together with the Federal States of Micronesia, received the Climate Protection Award bestowed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in April 2009. The award recognises Mauritius’ efforts to accelerate the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases as well as ensure the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.

7. Economist Intelligence Unit’s Index of Democracy 2008- The Economist

Mauritius earns highest marks in democracy index for the African region.


The Index of Democracy provides valuable information to investors on the current state of democracy of 167 states worldwide. Mauritius ranks 26th out of 167 countries with an overall score of 8.04. The index is made up of 5 categories namely: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. With the score of 8.04, Mauritius ranks among the full democracy category.

8. Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Destination- World Economic Forum

Mauritius is one of Africa’s most competitive travel and tourist destination


Mauritius ranks 40th globally in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness rankings and 4th regionally. The WEF report measures the different regulatory and business-related issues that have been identified as levers for improving travel and tourism competitiveness in countries around the world.
